Community Eats & Drinks

Brooklyn Street Local

Brooklyn Street Local is an eclectic breakfast and brunch spot embraced by Detroit’s Corktown, since 2012; when Canadian natives Deveri Gifford and Jason Yates  decided to ditch their Toronto-based digs for a rundown restaurant with their sleeping bags in tow.  They chose Detroit (as many others have since them) for its diverse, creative and affordable opportunities. Thankfully, it’s risky behaviour like theirs that has sparked the proliferation of restaurateurs and other creatives, flocking from LA, New York and Chicago, to be a part of the city’s electric energy. But thanks to Deveri‘s hippie roots, Brooklyn Street Local has managed to hang on to their unwavering ‘DIY’ and sustainability ethos while things continue to boom and develop around them.

Since the very beginning, Deveri’s passion for food and its, often-times, dirty politics, have been on the forefront of how the diner and its staff operate. Their public-forward sense of social responsibility helps to spearhead the movement toward consciously decreasing environmental footprints. With their farm fresh approach and by recycling and composting (among many other sustainable practices) they help to create mindfulness around food consumption for the community, all while producing some consistently good, wholesome food.

This laid-back diner has remained a local favourite for easy eats made with organic ingredients, sourced from local and urban farms. Some of their fantastic community partners include Oliver Farms, Food Field, Great Lakes Coffee, Sister Pies, Slow Jams and Avalon International Breads, to name just a few.

The price is right on their daily specials too, making this spot one of our go-to’s for hazy Sunday morning brunches. The cozy, relaxed-yet-considered interior whisks us away to Montreal circa 2005, acting as the perfect backdrop for care-free, post-Movement Festival breakfast poutines.
